Freda Gibson Powell was a theater teacher and enthusiast. She was born in Monahans, Texas, where she experienced the stage for the first time. Powell taught at an elementary school in Monahans, a high school in El Paso, and at Odessa College (Odessa), Sul Ross State (Alpine) and Tarrant County Junior College (Fort Worth), where she was also chairman of the Drama Department at each.
